9/11/2006 - 5yrsLater
On the 11th of September, 2006, I left my UES apartment with my camera and a feeling of emptiness. I knew I wanted to photograph this day, but I didn't know how and I didn't know what. The first thing I noticed once I stepped outside was a giant two-story flag being hung off the fire escape of the building across the street. From there, I noticed another one on a balcony and one atop a building and one on a boat sailing by. The more flags I saw the more energy I felt, the faster I moved, and the more hopeful the day became. I walked along the East River and zig-zagged a path to Herald Square, capturing every flag I saw along the way. In all, I shot almost 300 images, stopped for about a dozen casual conversations, and got some pretty intense blisters. These images are my memory of that day. More projects to come... |
